To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

The warming water temperatures have turned on the bass bite. Several medium to large size bass were weighed in throughout the week culminating in Friday’s catch of a 16.25# largemouth near the South Shore Rock Pile. Greg Springer of Vista caught and released the massive bucket mouth throwing a swimbait from shore. It has been fifteen years since a bass of this size has been caught at Lake Wohlford and it was truly a beauty.

Trout fishing has been sluggish the same warm temperatures which have spurred on the Crappie and Bass appear to be pushing the trout west into deeper, cooler waters. The top baits have been kastmasters, mousetails, and inflated nightcrawlers.

Crappie are being caught in increasing numbers around their usual haunts. Crappie prefer the cover of shade or overcast conditions and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners. They bite best in the pre-dawn hours.

The catfish bite continues to thrive at the west end. Lake Wohlford catfish bite best on cut mackerel or chicken liver.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
