To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
The trout bite has migrated west into deeper waters due to warming water temperatures. The largest trout of the past week belonged to Mario Livigni and weighed 7.90#s it was caught on chartreuse powerbait in Oakvale Cove. The top baits have been kastmasters, mousetails, and inflated nightcrawlers.
Largemouth bass have been moving in to shallower water to spawn. Mike Hernandez of Valley Center caught and released a 9.90# bass Thursday near the South Shore Rock Pile using a swimbait. Bass can be found around structure and respond well to crawdads, swimbaits, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie are being caught in small numbers. Crappie prefer the cover of shade or overcast conditions and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners. They bite best in the pre-dawn hours.
The catfish bite remains strong throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford catfish bite best on cut mackerel or chicken liver. Carp are moving in to the shallows possibly to spawn. Stop by the ranger station for a doughbait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
