Last Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday April 20th.
Next Plant: Catfish the last week in May.* (*awaiting confirmation)
Water temperature: At surface 68.00 f., 11.22 D.O. @ 10’ 68.18 f., 7.01D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motor boats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
It has been more than three weeks since the final trout plant, but some lucky anglers are still pulling some in. Charles Van Pelt of Vista had the largest trout of the past week at 8.30#s. This impressive rainbow was caught in Boat Dock Cove using a nightcrawler. Herb Cruz of San Marcos came in second with a very respectable 7.25# trout caught in the same general location and with the same bait.
The bass bite remains strong thanks to the favorable conditions; good water temps, and an abundance of bait fish. Roy Hammond of Escondido caught and released a 5.15# largemouth he caught on a rapala lure off Senior Shore. Bass can be found around structure and respond well to crawdads, shad-raps, and dark colored plastics.
Crappie are being caught in small numbers. Crappie prefer the cover of shade or overcast conditions and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners.
The catfish bite remains strong throughout the lake. Lake Wohlford catfish bite best on cut mackerel or chicken liver.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
