Huge Trout Highlights Week! The largest trout in over 6 years was taken this week during a week of warm weather and slow fishing. The best spots were in the middle of the Lake and along the east shoreline. The bass bite is moderate. The catfish bite is moderate at the Log Boom. The bluegill bite is slow. The water temperature is at 57 degrees.

Hours -During the month of January the gates to Lake Poway will open at 6:00 AM. Lake Poway will be closed for fishing and boating on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Monday, January 18.
Youth Fishing Derby - Grab your poles for the FREE 15th annual "youth only" fishing derby at Lake Poway on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Join the City of Poway, Captain Ron Baker formerly of Fish Talk Radio, and several big-name sponsors for a great day of fun and prizes when we stock 4,000 pounds of hungry trout. Registration begins at 6:00 a.m., and fishing will continue until noon. After the derby, all participating youth are invited to enjoy a tasty barbecue lunch courtesy of El Cajon Ford. The awards ceremony begins at 1:00 p.m., with a raffle and prizes for age-division winners. Grand prizes will be awarded for the Kid's Best Fishing Story Contest, so pull out your best fish story and join the fun!
Free overnight camping will be provided along with free fish tacos from 3:00 p.m.. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, February 5 furnished by Tommy Gomes of Catalina Offshore Products and the Uni Goop Pro Staff Team. Plus, bring your rods and reels to Captain Ron's free fishing seminar, "How to win the Lake Poway Youth Fishing Derby" on Friday, February 5 at 5:00 p.m. to get rigged right for the derby.
Lake Poway will be closed to all adult fishing from 6:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the day of the derby. This is a youth only event, and all participants must register in order to fish during derby hours. Parents are encouraged to assist children during the tournament, but will not be permitted to fish. Motor Boats will only be rented to the parent/guardian of a Youth Fishing Derby participant. Adults will be allowed to fish starting at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Rules for the Overnight Camp for the Youth Fishing Derby
? This is overnight camping for the Youth Fishing Derby only, vehicles without children will be turned away
? Please do not bring your RV
? You may bring a tent and place it in the grass areas
? No alcohol
? No smoking
? No glass
? No BBQs or fires of any kind
? No loud music
? No fishing
? You may line up outside the Poway Grill & Tackle in order to rent a boat, however only chairs are permitted (no tents, etc)
? The Poway Grill & Tackle will open at 5:30 am
? Fishing will start at 6:00 a.m.
Violation of any rule is reason for removal from the park and disqualification from the derby
Lake Poway will close for fishing and boating at 12 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2010 and there will be no fishing or boating all day on Friday, February 5, 2010 in preparation for the Youth Derby.
Fishing Requirements - A State of California Fishing License is no longer required to fish at Lake Poway. Each angler is allowed to use a maximum of two rods. The trout limit is now 4 trout.
Adults (anyone 16 years of age and older) require only a City of Poway Adult Fishing permit to fish at Lake Poway. Youths between the ages of 8 and 15 years of age only require a Youth Fishing permit. Youths under the age of 8 only require a Youth Fishing permit when their accompanying adult is not fishing. All permits can be purchased at the Lake Poway Grill & Tackle. You must carry your permit with you at all times.
Quagga Mussels -The Quagga mussel is not in Lake Poway. It is known that there are Quagga mussels in other lakes. In order to protect the integrity of the Lake Poway water system the following temporary restrictions are now in effect. Until further notice, the following items are prohibited at Lake Poway:
? Float tubes
? Private motors and anchors
? Live Bait Containers
? Fish Finders
? Floating Catch Baskets
? Live Bait (shiners, crawdads, etc) from any source other than the Lake Poway Concession
? Any other items, determined by Staff, to be potential contaminants
No Smoking at Lake Poway -Smoking is prohibited on Lake Poway, in the park and on the trails. Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking area that is located on the Northeast side of the Lake Poway Grill & Tackle building.
