Without the traditional arrival of summer or the typical schools of tuna that usually begin to show up around Memorial Day, the late September arrival of large schools of Bluefin, have been a welcomed surprise for Southern California Anglers. With the fish counts high and morale and anticipation even higher, I made the call to jump on board one of the newest boats in the Seaforth Landing fleet, The Eclipse. We embarked on a 1.5 day adventure to chase the ever elusive Bluefin Tuna that had been reported between the 302 and the 425. We set out from Seaforth just after 10 pm and conveined in the galley to discuss our strategy. The Owner/Operator Mark Gillette gave a great run down of what to expect the following day. He said that we would be heading for the large biomass of bluefin that had been spotted moving with the porpoise at approximately 40 miles. He told us that the fish had been holding but had been very difficult to get to bite consistantly, as is often the case with the finicky Bluefin tuna! The crew worked very hard to ensure that every passenger was rigged up with flourocarbon leaders and small #1 and 2 hooks. Several passengers were out of 20lb. flouro and the crew graciously provided the proper terminal tackle for those who were in need. It was very refreshing to have a crew take such great individual care of the passengers. We began our day at gray light soaking some of the healthiest 'dines I have used all year. The crew worked together like a well oiled machine in the way that they coached the passengers to follow their lines and to keep them taught. I was pleased to see how well the crew was able to keep everyone free from tangles. Although the passengers were locked and loaded the Bluefin remained fincky and would not cooperate. Captain Mark remained vigilant in his search and metered fish throughout the day but in the end, we were only able to put a few on deck. Although is was a tough day of fishing I really had a fantastic experience. The level of comfort and service aboard the Eclipse is at the top of the industry. Each and every passenger was looked after with a great deal of personal attention and I am anxious to get back out on the water with Team Eclipse!
