The annual Open Trout Derby saw anglers of all ages and skills enjoying a day of good fishing on Lake Poway. Lots of limits were taken throughout the day and some double digit trout made their way to the awards ceremony. The Grand Prize winner was Mario Gonzalz with an 11.47lbs Rainbow Trout. Severina Salcedo the Women's Division winner was right behind him with an 11.41lbs Rainbow Trout. The trout were biting on everything and anything but remain about 15' to 20' off the shoreline all around the lake. Special thanks to our sponsors at Fisherman's Outpost that provided some great prize packages and raffles along with MattLures and Woods Valley Kampground for their donations.

Starting in April, fishing at Lake Poway is going to get a lot more rewarding thanks to our sponsors at Fisherman's Outpost. They will be rewarding the biggest fish of the month with a custom wrapped rod and reel combo. The fish species will change from month to month so all anglers and fish have a chance to shine. The first fish on the list will be bass. The timeframe for the largest bass of the month for April will be from Wednesday, March 30, 2011 to Sunday May 1, 2011. All fish to be considered must be weighed in a logged at the boat dock to qualify. For tips, tricks and more on how to catch bass you can attend Fisherman's Outpost fishing seminar on Sunday, March 6, 2011 at 1:00pm. It is a free event.

Additionally, be on the lookout for Lake Poway's Family Campout Adventure Series coming on Saturday, April 16, 2011. This full moon campout is geared more towards the fisherman. The campout will include Family Fishing Permits; a boat for night fishing after the park is closed and cleared of the public, a fishing seminar hosted by Fisherman's Outpost, a camp fire and complimentary hot beverages in the morning at the Lake Poway Grill & Tackle. Space for fishing is limited to 40 boats, no shoreline fishing. For more information, e-mail or call the Park Ranger Office at (858) 668 - 4772 or LakeRanger@poway.org.
