Dixon Lake Trout season so far has been good with conditions improving each week after a stock. The trend continues with good fishing 3 to 4 days after the stock. The bite tends to slow down during a skip week. The trout bite will improve later this week after we stock on Wednesday. Trout Cove and Jack Creek Cove has been productive with Whisker Bay producing the bigger fish. The opening bite has been the key to a good start and lasting several hours and the bite slowly tapering off....then picking up again in the late afternoon.

Best trout of the week goes to Chris Stedman of Escondido fishing a mini jig in Whisker Bay with 8.9 lb. trout. 2013 trout derby youth winner Dominic Worsley (14 yrs. old) of San Marcos landed a 8 lb. 6 oz. trout on a gold spotted Thomas Buoyant lure from Trout Cove. Most all other trout have been in the 2-4 pound range.

For the best results in fishing for trout, try using the lightest line possible in the 2-4 lb. test line with a long leader and a small light weight...this set up seems to works best for these picky fish. Best baits for trout have been Power bait in rainbow and green colors. Green and white Power worms, mini jigs have been the lucky colors for big trout. The top lure has been the Thomas Buoyant. Night crawlers are the trout's best friend and are good go-to bait when the bite slows down.

The bass has a slow to steady pace this week with some decent size being caught and released days fishing near Boat Dock Cove area on plastics .Other smaller bass are being picked off by fishing the drop-shot plastic worms. No real movement for the spawning bass yet as they haven't starting moving up into the shallows.

The next stock will be planted with 1500 lbs. of Nebraska "Tail walker" trout on 02/26/14 pending all weather and road conditions. For further information on the fishing regulations, rules and stocking schedule, call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680

At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake received and was granted an Aquaculture Permit. This permit is valid again for the 2014 calendar year. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. A second rod permit/ticket can be purchased for an additional $2.00 fee. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect until further notice other than no fishing license required.
