Dixon Lake Trout season was an excellent season with over 27,000 pound of Nebraska "tail walkers" stocked every 2 weeks. The trout bite will continue to slow each day as warmer water and higher temperatures move in.... Any remaining trout will be in the deeper waters. Usually the start of June ends the trout season but there may be a stray trout or two left behind and where anglers start to prepare for the Bluegill and Catfish bite picking up. Try meal and red worms for the Bluegills along the piers and covered areas around the shoreline.
The bass has a slower pace this week ....... smaller size males are being caught and released??fishing near Boat Dock Cove area on plastics. Other bass are being picked off by fishing the drop-shot plastic worms in other cove areas. Most of the spawn has happened already as most of the males have moved off the spawning beds. An early summer spawn usually does not happen as bass and catfish can be caught pretty much year around depending on the water temperatures. Remember "Dottie"... proof that "catch and release of bass" keeps the dream alive of the next world record bass here again at Dixon Lake.
Start marking the calendars for night fishing season. Night fishing will start July 10th with 1000 pounds of Channel catfish. Boat rentals will start at 5 PM and will be half rates for boat with motorboat costing $30 and row boats for $14. Night boats get called in at 10:30 pm and shoreline fishing closes promptly at 11:45 PM. There will be a limited amount of shoreline available after the other day use areas closes. Cut mackerel, sardines, chicken livers and shrimp make excellent choices for catfish bait.
The last stock was planted with 3000 lbs. of Nebraska "Tail walker" trout on 4-23-14. For rules & regulations, stocking schedule and night fishing rules, please call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680.
At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake received and was granted an Aquaculture Permit. This permit is valid again for the 2014 calendar year. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. A second rod permit/ticket can be purchased for an additional $2.00 fee. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect until further notice other than no fishing license required.
