To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Bass fishing has been good with mostly small to medium sized bass being reported. Bass can be found around structure and are fond of crawdads, and dark colored plastics.
Fall has come to be synonymous with large catfish here at lake Wohlford, and this year looks to be no exception. Local regular, Justin Kennedy, an avid bass fisherman, caught and released an 18.40# catfish Saturday while fishing for bass with a plastic worm off the South Shore Rock Pile. Lake Wohlford cats respond well to cut mackerel or chicken liver. Drop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well on both catfish and carp.
Crappie can be found in the early morning hours near rock piles or under the shade of a dock. Crappie are usually caught on live golden shiners or with a Crappie jig.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
