Waterfowl hunting starts December 1 and will go thru January 30, 2011. Hunting will be on Sundays till noon and all day Wednesdays. The Lake will open at noon on Wednesday for fishing but will not be open for fishing on Wednesdays at all. Make a note on your fishing calendars. If you are interested in buying a season blind, please call the lake at 619-447-8123. Fishing has been pretty slow for trout this week. The weather might have something to do with it. Believe it or not, the crappie have been biting and some bass. Jess Ranch will be stocking 1200 pounds of trout this coming week. Rich Del Peno got a 3.9 Largemouth Bass using a gold kastmaster at kitchen cove. The autumn colors will probably be gone in another week. It is so beautiful right now and the deers are everywhere. Watch for them on the highway. They are crossing to get to the lake water.
It is almost time for the Great Blue Heron mating ritual. Plunage becomes a richer blue. The male struts as the birds bond. The bonding goes on for quite awhile. Most of the nesting of these long legged and sharp billed birds are in colonies. Here at Lake Cuyamaca they select a bare Oak tree with strong top branches. When the female offers the male a small stick it signals she is ready for nesting. The area is selected and a strong large nest is engineered far above the ground. Actual nesting takes place much later, usually in February to April. When the young birds fledge, only 1 in 3 will survive their first year.
Free fishing class is held every Saturday at 10:00 am at the Launch Ramp. The decontamination washdown is required for all private vessels and motors before a launch. Check with staff if you have any questions. To make reservations for camping, condos or cabins, call 877-581-9904.
