Dixon Lake Trout season so far has been excellent. Fishing conditions have slowed downed a bit since there was a skip week in stocking. Things will improve this week after the stock. It seems to be a pattern after each stock with limits galore and excellent fishing for about 3-5 days only....after that is really tends to slow the fishing down to single numbers being caught. No big trout to report this week. Average sized stockers have been the tradition the past month or so with fish in the 2-4 pound range. Best spots for fishing have been Trout Cove and Whisker Bay areas. The lake has received over 18,000 lbs. of prime grade "A" Nebraska tail walkers so far this season.
For best result for fishing for the elusive trout, try using the lightest line possible in the 2-4 lb. test line with a long leader and a small light weight...this set up seems to works best for these picky fish. Best baits so for trout have been Power bait in rainbow, green and orange does very well. Green, red and orange color Power worms have been the lucky colors for big trout. The top lures are Kastmasters, Thomas Buoyant, and Rooster tail lures. Night crawlers are the trout's best friend and are good go-to bait when the bite slows down.
With the forecast of some rain showers this last week, usually turns the catfish bite on if things get flowing in Jack's creek. Try fishing with cut mackerel, sardines or shrimp. However, no big catfish have been caught this past couple of weeks.
The bass action and spawns that usually start around March are showing little to no signs of any activity at all...a few bass were caught this week from a group scouting out the fishing grounds. Not many anglers are targeting the bass this week. Still a tad early for the season to start with water temps being this cold. Things could turn around quickly if the right conditions and the warmer weather holds ups...could help water conditions improve over the next first few weeks of March.
The lake will be planted with another 1500 lbs. of Nebraska "Tail walkers" trout on 03/07/12 all pending weather and road conditions. The week of 3/12 to 3/16 will be a skip week for stocking. Another 1500 pounds of trout will be stocked again on 3/21/12. For further information on the fishing regulations, rules and stocking schedule, call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680.
At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake received and was granted an Aquaculture Permit. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect until further notice other than no fishing license required.
