Dixon Lake Trout season so far has been excellent. A lot of big fish weighed in this week. It seems to be a pattern after each stock with limits galore and excellent fishing for about 3-5 days only....after that is really tends to slow the fishing down to single numbers being caught. Best spots for fishing have been Trout Cove, Whisker Bay and Boat Dock cove areas. The lake has received over 19,500 lbs. of prime grade "A" Nebraska tail walkers so far this season.
Top fish of the week has a long list. Top honors go to Ken Kusumoto of El Monte for his 10 lb. 4 oz. trout on an orange mini jig inside of Trout Cove. His fishing partner Ken Yamani from Simi Valley weighed in a respectable 6 lb.4 oz. trout for the same area. Rex Hickman of Vista fishing from Boat Dock cove pulled a 6 lb.9 oz. and a 7lb. 11oz. trout on a Thomas Buoyant lure. For best result for fishing for the elusive trout, try using the lightest line possible in the 2-4 lb. test line with a long leader and a small light weight...this set up seems to works best for these picky fish. Best baits so far for trout have been Power bait in rainbow, green and especially yellow this week. Green, red and orange color Power worms have been the lucky colors for big trout. The top lures this week have been Thomas Buoyants and the mini crappie jigs in the orange color. Night crawlers are the trout's best friend and are good go-to bait when the bite slows down.
The bass action and spawns that usually starts around March are showing little signs of some activity...a few bass were caught this week from a group scouting out the fishing grounds. Craw Bacilek of Escondido landed a nice 6 lb. 4 oz. bass on a plastic black worm near Bass Point. Still, not many anglers are targeting the bass this week. Still a tad early for the season to start with water temps being this cold. Things could turn around quickly if the right conditions and the warmer weather holds ups...could help water conditions improve over the next few weeks of March.
The lake will be planted with another 1500 lbs. of Nebraska "Tail walkers" trout on 03/21/12 all pending weather and road conditions. The week of 3/12 to 3/16 will be a skip week for stocking. Another 1500 pounds of trout will be stocked again on 4/04/12. For further information on the fishing regulations, rules and stocking schedule, call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680.
At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake has been granted an Aquaculture Permit. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect until further notice other than no fishing license required.
