Dixon Lake's trout fishing is here and the trout derby in full swing... October 31st was the opening day for trout season. Most fish are in the 2-4 pound range with a few in the 4-6 pound range. Just ask top angler of the week Michael Wolfe of Escondido who was fishing the day before the derby that landed a 10.75 lb. rainbow on peach power bait. Second honors goes to Jose Gurrola from Oceanside caught a nice 7 lb. 11 oz. trout from the Buoy line on a yellow jig. Way to GO... Right now green power bait and white, pink and red Power worm are the HOT ticket baits around the lake. Best baits in the past have been night crawlers, power worms, power baits, Kastmaster and Thomas Buoyant lures. Get ready for another great year by increasing your chances of catching the famous Nebraska Tail walkers by using light line in the 2-4 lb. range and using a variety of baits until the right combo is found. As the season begins most of the hot spots are Jack Creek and Trout cove areas with the Buoy line and Whisker Bay coming in a close second. Other secrets from anglers are waiting a day or two after the stocks...however the day of stocking can be very productive.
We will be stocking Nebraska Tail Walkers again this year for our upcoming 2012/13 trout season. 1st plant was on Halloween Day October 31st with 1500 pounds of trout pending weather and road conditions from Nebraska. The next stock will be on Nov 20th with 1500 pounds for the upcoming Thanksgiving Day holiday week.
The 34th Annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby scheduled for Veteran's Day weekend November 9th-12th 2012. Dixon Lake will be stocking 4500 pounds before the derby of trophy sized fish. Prizes will be awarded for the daily 1st and 2nd largest trout each day. Top prizes will be for the grand prize-largest trout of the derby and largest trout in each age bracket for senior, adults and youth 15 and under. There will be prizes for the first 15 tagged fish turned in during the derby and a prize for the smallest trout. All anglers must have a fishing permit each day of the derby. Derby hours are from 6 AM to 4:45 PM each day. The results of the derby will be posted after the final day on Monday 11/12.
For further fishing regulations, park rules, trout derby rules and future trout stocking schedules please call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680 or visit http://www.dixonlake.com
At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake has been granted an Aquaculture Permit. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect.
