Despite heavy winds and rain the first day, the 34th Annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby attracted 1,000 anglers. Fishing was good throughout the derby with the Grand Prize trout weighing in at 8.46 lbs. Josh Hamilton of Escondido coaxed this lunker in on a pink/white Mouse Tail from Trout Cove. Other prize winners included a 7.81 by Jose Gurrola of San Marcos, a 7.25 by Robert Caterino of Escondido, a 7.17 by Wyatt Voeks of Escondido, and a 7.05 by Joe Brashear of Escondido.
Action after the derby has continued hot with lots of left over lunkers coming in. Jason Dobson of Escondido weighed in the largest trout of the week after he landed a 9.0 lb. beauty on a mini-jig from Trout Cove. Brian Fontaine of Santee weighed in an 8.75 pounder taken on a mini-jig from Pier 2, and Mike Wesdell of San Diego an 8.7 on power bait from the buoyline.
Best baits have been night crawlers, power worms, power baits, mini-jigs, Kastmaster, Rooster Tail and Thomas Buoyant lures. Using light line in the 2-4 lb. test range in the clear waters of Dixon Lake, and using a variety of baits until the right combo is found, will greatly increase your chances of a successful outing. The hot spots are Jack Creek and Trout cove areas with the Buoy line and Whisker Bay coming in a close second.
The next stock will be on Nov 20th with 1500 pounds for the upcoming Thanksgiving Day holiday week.
For further fishing regulations, park rules, trout derby rules and future trout stocking schedules please call the Dixon Lake Ranger Station at 760-839-4680 or visit http://www.dixonlake.com.
At the present time, Dixon Lake no longer requires a California fishing license from the Dept. of Fish & Game. Dixon Lake has been granted an Aquaculture Permit. All anglers 8 yrs. and older will still need a daily fishing lake permit. All other park rules, fishing regulations and City of Escondido municipal codes will remain in effect.
