Massive Tailwalkers at Lake Poway
This week, 12/5 through 12/8, has seen tons of limits being caught and some massive trophies. Sean Reed caught two behemoth trout! A 9.5 (caught on 12/7) and an 8 pounder (caught on 12/5) on LipRipperz in Hidden Bay. You can find those pictures and others by visiting our website at http://www.poway.org/lakepoway.
The trout have been hitting mini-jigs and Thomas Buoyants from the shoreline but anglers haven't had as much success with still fishing with powerbait and nightcrawlers. It seems as if the fish are going for the reaction strike. The hot spots have been Half Moon Bay and Hidden Bay. Boaters have also had luck on the troll using the nightcrawler rig and Thomas Buoyants.
The catfish are still biting everywhere. From the North Shore to the center of the Lake and to the East end of the Log Boom to the Fishing Pier. Hidden Bay has been a really productive spot this week. You name the place and catfish have been caught there recently. Some trout fishermen have caught their limit of catfish (along with some trout) on Powerbait recently. If you are targeting catfish stick with mackerel and chicken liver.
The bass are deep and drop-shotting large and small plastics are working well in places like the first two barrels on the Log Boom and the Rock Pile off of Jump-Off Point. Now that the trout are in, the swimbait bite is beginning to pick up and should continue through the spring.
Just as a reminder, our next stock will be 1,500 pounds of Tailwalkers on Wednesday, December 19. I have included a detailed list of baits that work well at our lake and how to rig up the powerbait/nightcrawler rig in the most recent fish report that can be found by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page. The concession stand will also remain closed as the new owner is making repairs and many interior changes. It will be well worth the wait and will hopefully be up and running by late December. But it the meantime, bring your own bait and snacks.
