To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Half day bass boats are available weekdays for 35$ each.
The trout season is winding down but rainbows are still being caught and will probably linger into June. Wayne Ring had the biggest trout of the past week at 3.20#s caught on florescent powerbait on Senior Shoreline. Powerbait and inflated nightcrawlers have been the best baits.
The bass bite showed signs of improvement beginning in the latter part of the week. Jeff Hodges of Valley Center caught and released a 6.75# bass on Thursday using a senko worm at bass point. Bass can be found near structure, and respond best to crawdads, shad raps, or dark colored plastics.
The catfish derby we hosted last year was such a success that we are holding it again this year. The derby is scheduled to take place Saturday July 5th , and the lake will be open for extended hours for the event. The fifth of July also happens to be free fishing day, so permits only, no licenses are required for this event. Lake Wohlford cats prefer chicken liver or cut mackerel. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well for both catfish and carp.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
