To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
The lake will be closed on weekdays beginning this Tuesday September 2nd and remain open for weekends only throughout the fall.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Catfish are being caught all over the lake, but particularly on either end. Lake Wohlford cats respond well to cut mackerel or chicken liver. Drop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that works well on both catfish and carp.
Crappie are being caught mostly in the early morning hours. Crappie prefer the cover of rocks or submerged willows and are most often caught using finger jigs or live golden shiners.
The bass bite is currently on an upswing as small to medium sized Largemouth bass are being caught with increasing frequency. Bass can be found most often lurking around structure. Justin Peterson of Valley Center caught and released a 6.25# bass Friday on a plastic worm in Boat Dock Cove. Shad raps, crawdads, and dark colored plastics are some of the most productive baits for catching bass. Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
