To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Opening day of trout season is a week away. The upcoming season holds a lot of promise with increases in both the sizes of the initial plant and the total volume of fish for the season. Saturday, Dec. 13th is opening day of trout season at Lake Wohlford. We will re-open for weekday fishing the following Monday.
2015 fishing licenses are now for sale at the Lake Wohlford café and would make an excellent gift that could be enjoyed throughout the new year.
The big news this week is a new Lake Record Catfish. Paul Voytko of Vista caught and released a 49.30# behemoth of a catfish while fishing with his buddy Mike Bonds who caught a very respectable 15.45# catfish himself. The duo were fishing with cut mackerel in a rowboat off the South Shore Rock Pile. The catfish record has changed hands numerous times in the last few years, as the fish just keep getting bigger. Whether their increasing size is due to the decline in the carp population, or for some other reason, the trend seems to suggest that we will be seeing a fifty pound plus, or better, catfish weighed in either this winter, or by next fall.
Bass fishing has been decent with mostly small to medium sized bass being reported. Bass can be found near structure and respond best to crawdads, and dark colored plastics.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
