Next Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday December 17th.
Water temperature: At surface 64.04 f., 6.06 D.O. @ 15' 64.58 f., 4.98 D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesday and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
2015 fishing licenses are now for sale at the Lake Wohlford café and would make an excellent gift that could be enjoyed throughout the new year.
The initial trout plant went off without a hitch, and on opening day the trout bite was excellent, despite the earlier rains. The early hotspots were Boat Dock Cove and the Southern Shore, past Lusardi Point, with morning limits coming out of both areas. Light tackle is essential for trout fishing success. Leader line should be no heavier than 4 pound test with size 14 or smaller treble hook. The best baits are powerbait/powerworms (yellow, green, rainbow) inflated nightcrawlers or a combination of the two. Salmon eggs are another solid option. We are planting again this Wednesday so expect the fishing to stay hot throughout the week.
The Bass fishing has been good and should really turn on with the re-introduction of stocked trout onto the menu. This is an excellent time to be throwing swimbaits in hopes of landing a large bass Hayden Heck of Valley Center caught and released an eight pound bass Saturday on a swimbait fishing off the South Shore Rock Pile.Bass can be found near structure and respond best to crawdads, swimbaits, and dark colored plastics.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
