In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.

It is opening day and the fishing is outstanding with many limits being recorded early in the day. The initial plant of 4,500 lbs of Nebraska "Tailwalkers" went well. Rain early in the week could potentially slow things a bit, if there is enough of it, but currently conditions could not be better. With two additional plants scheduled in December, for a total of 7,500 lbs in just three weeks, fishing should continue to be excellent for some time.

Bass are to be found in the early morning and late afternoons lurking near submerged rock-piles lying in wait for the trout. Clement Miner of Valley Center caught and released an 8.20# Bass on Saturday off Bass Point. His fishing partner Mike Kostial of Oceanside caught and released a 6.65# Bass that same morning near the South Shore Rock Pile. This would be an excellent time to be using swimbait that resembles a small trout in hopes of landing a Big bass.

A small number of crappie are being caught mostly early in the day. Jerry Harris of Riverside caught a couple of Crappie early Saturday morning in Boat Dock Cove the largest of which weighed 1.05#s. Crappie respond well to finger jigs or live golden shiners and prefer shady places in which to hide.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in 4 categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
