Park hours: 6:00 A.M. - 7:30 P.M.* Open seven days a week.
Dock closes: 7:00 P.M. * (new times effective April 6th)
Last Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday March 25th.
Next Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday April 8th.
Water temperature: At surface 63.70 f., 8.31 D.O. @ 10' 63.52 f., 6.87 D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
In early spring there is a brief period of time, before the last trout plants are made, when all the different types of fish in the lake are all biting at the same time. This is that time, and it is not unusual to see a fisherman go home with a catfish, a trout, and a handful of crappie, assuming of course he was conscientous enough to release any bass that might have been caught.
The largest trout of the past week belonged to Alex Mateo of San Marcos and weighed 11.25#s. It was caught using powerbait on Senior Shoreline.
Crappie are being caught in the early morning hours throughout the lake. Collin Eddo of Vista caught a 2.50# crappie on a live shiner in Oakvale Cove. Crappie favor the cover of shade and are most often caught on mini-jigs or live golden shiners.
The bass bite has been good. Josh Dowhen of Vista caught a 6.80# bass on crappie jig at the west buoy line. The bass respond well to crawdads, shad raps, or dark colored plastics.
Catfish are being caught more often as the days get warmer. Lake Wohlford Cats prefer chicken liver or cut mackerel.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
