Last Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday April 22nd.
Next Plant: Catfish in July.
Water temperature: At surface 65.70 f., 8.31 D.O. @ 10’ 64.52 f., 6.87 D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
To protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.
Trout continue to be caught on the southern shore, in Oakvale Cove, and areas west of Senior Shoreline. Rudy Isaguirre of Escondido had the biggest trout of the past week at 7.80#s. Mr. Isaguirre’s fish was caught on a nightcrawler in Boat Dock Cove. Rainbow powerbait and inflated nightcrawlers have been the top baits.
The bass bite has been good with small to medium sized bass being reported. The bass can be found near structure and respond best to crawdads, shad raps, or dark colored plastics. The earlier sunrises have made the Crappie more elusive. Crappie prefer the cover of shade and are most often caught on crappie jigs or live golden shiners.
The catfish bite is predominating as the trout begin to subside. Lake Wohlford cats prefer chicken liver or cut mackerel. Stop by the ranger station for a dough-bait recipe that does well for both catfish and carp.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in four categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
