Dixon Lake trout fishing is slowing, but still remains semi-steady.

Rainbow and garlic PowerBait have been the most frequently reported effective baits, followed by garlic night crawlers and mini jigs.

Pier 1, Jack Creek Cove and Whisker Bay remain the most popular fishing spots. All fish are deep into the water. Rangers recommend casting out as far as possible for the best chance at catching trout or catfish.

Catfish fishing remains steady and the bite has increased within the past week. Fresh shrimp is being reported as the best bait, followed by mackerel dipped in stink bait. Large catfish have made multiple appearances throughout the week, but are most frequently seen in Whisker Bay and near the buoy line.

Bass fishing has been excellent. Mike Dispensiero of San Marcos continues to bring in multiple large bass. His most recent bass weighed in at 7.8 lbs and was caught on Pier 1 using a jig. Louie Bautista also brought in a 5 lb. 8 oz. bass using a crawdad in Boat Dock Cove.

Larger than average bluegill have made recent appearances as well. Anthony Najera of Escondido caught a large 1 lb. blue gill on 5/23 using mackerel in a boat near the buoy line.

Starting June 6th, the Dixon Lake Whopper Contest will shift gears and feature the new fish of the season: catfish. The first catfish stock is tentatively scheduled for July 10th. Night fishing will also kick off on or near July 10th.

Dixon Lake staff encourages anglers who qualify to take advantage of “Senior/Military Wednesdays.” Senior citizens 60 and older and military personnel are eligible to purchase $18 all day motor boats, and $12 all day row boats every Wednesday.
